Position Summary: 

Reporting to the Director of Health Information Management, the Assistant Director, Coding is responsible for managing the coordination of accurate and compliant coding of pertinent medical information to include diagnoses and procedures performed with adherence to established coding guidelines of ICD-9, CPT, governmental and third-party payers; ensures accurate assignment and subsequent reimbursement.  Incumbent oversees and maintains overall responsibility for the Coding Unit, determining strategic priorities and planning and directing unit operations. The incumbent uses technical coding subject matter expert (SME) to serve as a resource for the organization to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements; leads project team responsible for successful and timely ICD-10 implementation and training.


Required Qualifications:

Ability to compile, interpret and evaluate statistical and medical data

Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload

CCS credential

Certification as an ICD-10 trainer through AHIMA

Conitnuing membership with the AHIMA

Demonstrated coding management experience in an academic medical center

Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job

Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties

Strong knowledge of ICD-9-CM and CPT coding, Prospective Payment Systems, and case mix optimization


Preferred Qualifications:

BS or MS degree in HIM

Knowledge of University and medical center organizations, policies, procedures and forms

RHIA, CCS-P, CPC-H, CDIP, or ACDIS certification

Strong computer skills to include working knowledge of MS Office, Access, Excel, Word and Power Point

Training in performance improvement methodologies, preferably Lean or Six Sigma
